Interproximal reduction (IPR), sometimes referred to as “slenderizing” is a safe and effective way to create space on a dental arch when there is overcrowding of teeth. This is a procedure that is associated with orthodontic treatment; especially when using clear aligner (Invisalign, Clear Correct, etc.) therapy.
The procedure is done either using a special bur in a dental hand piece or with hand instruments designed to eliminate small amounts of enamel. The theory is that taking a small amount of tooth structure away from multiple teeth in order to create the necessary space to align teeth is far better than extracting an entire tooth. Removing small amounts of enamel will not harm the teeth and the procedure is painless with no anesthesia required.
