Gum Recession
Gum recession is one of the most common dental diseases, occurring in more than 50% of the adult population.
Gum recession is not only unsightly but can also lead to tooth sensitivity, root decay and erosion, and even jeopardize the long-term health of the tooth. Gum recession can be the result of periodontal (gum) disease or can even occur in a completely healthy mouth. Common causes of gum recession are: inadequate or improper oral hygiene, periodontal (gum) disease, faulty dental restoration, crooked teeth, clinching and/or grinding teeth.
The good news is that gum recession can be fixed but addressing the cause(s) is critical. Without addressing the causes of the disease then whatever is done to fix the problem will only be a short-term solution. Therefore, astute diagnosis and resolution of the cause(s) of gum recession is critically important before anything is done to fix it.
More good news: there is now a revolutionary way to resolve gum recession. Historically, the only way we had to fix receding gums was to cut a piece of tissue from the palate of the patient and sew it over the affected area of gum recession. This technique is extremely invasive, painful and leaves the area of recession looking unnatural; much like a patch placed over a hole on a pair of jeans. This technique also has limitations. How do you address a situation where there is recession on virtually every tooth? There is not enough tissue on a patient’s palate to cover so many spots of recession.
Today we have an innovative technique called the “Pinhole Surgical Technique®” (PST). This revolutionary technique, developed by Dr. John Chao, is far less invasive, causes very little discomfort and can be used to treat an entire mouth of recession using no tissue grafting (no patches) and no sutures. The entire procedure is done through a small pinhole using patented, specially designed instruments to gently move the patient’s own tissue over the area of recession. Recovery is quick and easy because there is no cutting or suturing.
Only doctors who have studied with Dr. Chao are licensed to perform the procedure and have access to the specially designed instruments. The procedure is so unique and revolutionary that it is actually patented.
The results we have seen using this procedure on our patients during the past several years are truly amazing. While Dr. Chao has only been teaching other doctors the procedure for a few years, he has been doing the procedure on his patients for more than 15 years and the results are shown to be highly stable long-term. While only a limited number of doctors are currently licensed to perform this revolutionary procedure, we believe this will eventually become the treatment of choice by both doctors and patients due to the beautiful results and the numerous benefits over traditional treatment options.
As an incentive to new patients, we are offering 10% off of the Pinhole Surgical Technique®. Please call Randi to schedule your consultation (714-838-0760) to see if you are an eligible candidate for this treatment.
