One question I am often asked by patients who are considering the Pinhole Surgical Technique® (PST) is: “How good are the long-term results of the procedure?” My reply is always the same: “It depends.” I go on to explain that the PST will reverse gingival recession, but it will not automatically eliminate what caused the tissue recession in the first place. We will then have a discussion about things that might be causing their specific recession and do all we can to eliminate as many of those causes as possible.
The most common causes of gum recession are: periodontal disease, clinching and grinding of the teeth, traumatic bite caused by misaligned teeth, genetics, inadequate dental care, hormonal changes, body piercing of the lip or tongue, use of tobacco products, high frenum attachment, and underdeveloped dental arches. In our office we will do a thorough examination to determine which of the above causes of gum recession can be eliminated in order for the gum reversal procedure (PST) to have long lasting results.
Our office been doing the PST since Dr. Chao first started teaching doctors how to do his revolutionary procedure back in 2010. As part of the teaching process, Dr. Chao invited his own patients who had been treated more than ten years previously to be examined by all of us who were taking the certification course. These patients all had beautiful results that were stable after many years. The earliest patients we treated back in 2010 are still enjoying the benefits of this newer procedure for reversing gum recession. The PST reverses gum recession and gives our patients a more youthful smile that will last for many years.
