Porcelain veneers cover the front side of teeth to give teeth the appearance of being straight, white and well-formed.
When a patient wants a quick fix for misaligned, discolored and/or misshaped teeth then often veneers are the best solution. Veneers can be completed in as little time as a week and therefore create a truly transformational experience. Patients are shocked by the dramatic difference veneers can make instantly to the appearance of their smile.
An alternative to veneers would be orthodontics and teeth bleaching. Because we do both veneers and orthodontics and teeth whitening in our office we will never recommend veneers when orthodontics is the better option and vise versa. The old adage applies: “when a hammer is the only tool in your bag, everything begins to look like a nail.”
There are basically two types of veneers: no-prep and minimal-prep. Advantages of no-prep veneers are there is no cutting of the teeth and therefore no giving anesthesia. Disadvantages are they are more bulky than natural teeth and not quite as life-like as minimal-prep veneers. Minimal prep veneers require cutting teeth (often more extensively if teeth are crooked) which requires anesthesia. The advantages of minimal-prep veneers is they are more life-like and not bulky.
Porcelain veneers can be made to look just like a natural tooth and can artificially straighten teeth while making them whiter, close gaps and improve the shape. In short, a patient can go from an unpleasant smile to Hollywood perfect in a week.
Veneers are not the best solution for every compromised smile. They are not indicated to correct severe crowding, for example, and they are also not ideal for appreciably widening a smile.
